What Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection actually accomplished has not yet been finalized, though it has begun. One day God will finish His mission to re-make this planet, not just individuals. He cares not just about the Spiritual, but also about the Social, Cultural, and Economic realms of life as well, because it all belongs to Him. Therefore, God wants us to join His mission by working for the welfare of the city, praying and working for its entire common good (Jer. 29:7). He doesn’t want us to separate from it (the “conservative” or religious approach). Nor does He want us to simply assimilate into it (the “liberal” or irreligious approach). Rather, He wants us to sacrifice ourselves for it, to get into it and love it into restoration. Thus, we will work for the common good, culturally and economically, by engaging our vocations, the arts, education, government, and all local institutions with compassion, creativity, and courage. And, we will work for the common good socially by seeking restoration of family dynamics as well as social justice for the poor and the vulnerable. Our goal is not to achieve a great church, but a great Metro East.
